As I painted this piece, a certain portion of prose poetry resonated in my mind. I later looked it up and decided to borrow the title for this painting from it. Psalm 42:7-8 says, “Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me. By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me — a prayer to the God of my life” (NIV). There is something about the darkness and endless repetition of waves in deep water that calls forth intensity and power. I hoped to capture a little of that in this small piece as I studied the techniques that would form the backdrop for a future painting (Creation Longs, see pp. 124-125).
