Boris Brott, the well-known Hamilton symphony conductor, and his wife Ardyth called me out of the blue one day and I was almost speechless! He said, "just call me Boris" and went on to tell me how much he loved my work and asked me to be this year's performance artist for the Brott Music Festival educational concerts. I was a little hesitant as I'm not a typical performance artist who does fast, abstract work. But they were very understanding when I told them I could not do a painting in such a short time on stage (15 minutes) and instead suggested a time-lapse painting. So I worked on the painting in my studio with a camera on a tripod taking photos every 30 seconds. When I ended up with well over 6000 photos and crashed my computer multiple times, I had to settle for using every other one ... 3000 photos for a ten minute time-lapse video, which played on a large screen while I painted the finishing touches live on stage, as Boris led the National Academy Orchestra in a fifteen minute rendition of the Russian fairytale "Peter and the Wolf" by Prokofiev. For the last few minutes, they transitioned from the video to a projection of me painting live, then afterwards Boris did a short Q&A with me. They filled the great hall in Hamilton Place for two concerts with upwards to 4000 children in attendance. The Brotts purchased the painting for the Brott Music Festival office and people immediately began requesting prints! The video of the performance can be viewed on my YouTube Channel.
